Expert commentary : In 1907, Robert Delaunay began artistic work on the monuments of Paris, which he decided to extend in 1926 by producing some twenty lithographs including Paris, La Seine and la Tour. We immediately feel in this lithograph the influence of cubism and in particular of Picasso on the artist. This lithograph is a characteristic work of the period where Delaunay wonders about the relevance of cubism and futurism before switching to abstraction with Orphism and simultanism. To make the link and understand the work in more detail, we advise you to read the artist's biography below.

BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST :

At the beginning of the 20th century the artist of French origin Robert DELAUNAY (1885-1941) and his wife Sonia DELAUNAY-TERK were among the pioneers of abstraction with KANDINSKY, MONDRIAN and MALEVITCH. Abstraction has its origins in the scientific understanding of visual and sound perceptions but also of esotericism and spirituality. It will lead these artists to abandon the representation of reality for a liberation of color and line. For Robert DELAUNAY and the members of this artistic trend, it is a personal, thoughtful, philosophical and emotional approach, enriched by travel, the surrounding political context but also by the Fauve, Expressionist and Cubist movements that they assimilate while at the same time. adding their experience. In the history of art, abstraction is not just a movement, it appears as a rupture between 1910 and 1920. Robert DELAUNAY is the main creator of two movements: Orphism and simultanism.

Delaunay was part of an avant-garde generation, particularly prolific artistically between 1912 and 1914. He was closely linked (in correspondence, in art, even in friendship) with the poets Guillaume Apollinaire and Blaise Cendrars, the painters Russian Vassily Kandinsky and Michel Larionov, German painters August Macke or Franz Marc, Slovak painter Geza Szobel.

After the war, he befriended the artists of the surrealist movement, of whom he produced several portraits, without adopting their points of view and their artistic visions. He will notably have a strong and lasting friendship with the poet Tristan Tzara.
