Expert commentary : Throughout his various periods, Jacques Poncet explored themes dear to him, playing with framing, chromatic variations, subtle tones, and a Fauvist palette. From his studio in Croix-Rousse, he observed and painted the city of Lyon, revealing its poetic dimension. Nature also constitutes another major source of inspiration; tall trees rise in his canvases, foliage touching the sky, and large weeping willows seem to caress the ground. However, given the success of his early abstract works, Poncet committed himself more resolutely to this path. Finally, his work centered on the female nude displays a subtle sensuality. The female body is revealed in a delicate interplay of materials, between carnal presence and visual poetry.
Artist Biography : Jacques PONCET (1921-2012) is a key figure in the Lyon School. From the very beginning, his talents were recognized by the art market. He exhibited in the most influential galleries in Lyon, such as those of Janine Bressy, "L'Œil Écoute" and Henri Chartier. He participated in group exhibitions alongside Lyon's avant-garde artists, notably at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Charleroi, Belgium, in 1963. From the end of the 1950s, he was spotted by the famous Parisian gallery owner Pierre Loeb, then representing Picasso, Miró, Kandinsky and Chagall. In the 1960s, he also exhibited at the Galerie des Arts, alongside Léger, Manessier, Tal Coat, Da Silva and Zao Wou-Ki. In 2000, Paul Dini selected four of the artist's large paintings to be included in the modern and contemporary art collection of the Musée de Villefranche-sur-Saône.
