André MASSON - Original Print - Lithography - Untitled (A poem in each Paul Eluard book) 1

Artist : André MASSON (1896-1987)

Title : Untitled, 1955

Medium : Lithography on paper

Type of work : Original print signed "André" and dated by hand by the artist in pencil lower middle, annotated "artist's proof" and dedicated "Pour l'ami Broder". This artist's proof was published in addition to the unsigned edition of 120 copies of illustration 7 of the tribute book to Paul Eluard "A poem in each book" published by Louis Broder in 1956. In the book, illustration 7 is positioned next to Paul Eluard's poem "A la Flamme des Flogs" taken from "Capital de la paix" (1926). The work comes from the album called "Album A", Reprinted from the book in 20 copies. Each album contains, like the book, 16 prints but they have been printed with wide margins and unlike the prints in the book, they are all signed or monogrammed by the artists. The album we have was the property of the publisher Louis BRODER. It stands out from the others because it is enriched in addition to the 16 wide-margined illustrations of many other prints (including this work by André Masson) collected by the publisher throughout his collaboration with the artists on this book.

Dimensions : 19 x 18 cm

Condition : Good, two small almost invisible holes of barely 0.1 mm, probably linked to the printing matrix of the print but which will be completely invisible to the frame. See picture 5.

Provenance : Collection Genevieve et Jean Paul Kahn

Expert's comment : In progress

Biography of the artist : André Masson is a French painter who participated in the surrealist movement from the early 1920s to the late 1950s. Famous for his "automatic drawings" and his "sand paintings", he is marked, on an aesthetic level, by "the spirit of metamorphosis" and "mythical invention". Sensitive to the writings of Sade and his friend Georges Bataille, his work can be interpreted as an uncompromising questioning of human barbarism and perverse behavior. Nicknamed "the rebel of Surrealism", his powerful imprint will mark all the painting of the 20th century and will announce American action painting.

Some verses of the poem "In the flame of the whips":
Metal that night, metal of day, star in the nest,
Point of fear, ragged fruit, rapacious love,
Knife holder, vain defilement, flooded lamp,
Wish for love, fruit of disgust, prostitute ice cream
